Still in Motion

Exceptional engineering is often invisible.

The Rolls-Royce self-righting centre cap is one of those details. As the wheel rotates, the RR monogram appears almost motionless — an illusion maintained through continuous correction.

This project began with a simple question.

How does it actually work?

I recreated the complete front wheel assembly in Cinema 4D at real-world scale, beginning with the 22-inch Black Badge Style 679 forged alloy wheel and extending into the inner barrel, brake assembly, hub, self-righting centre cap and surrounding mechanical components.

Using Xpresso, the wheel's rotation, steering, suspension, camber and centre-cap behaviour were built as one procedural system driven from a single Time › Frame input — without hand-keyframing the motion.

The Behaviour

The wheel moves forward, pauses and steers before reversing to create additional turning space, then pauses again before moving forward with corrective steering to complete the manoeuvre.

The iconic floating centre cap responds with minimal corrections at these low speeds, with the RR Monogram exhibiting subtle inertia and gentle damped movement before naturally settling upright.

Towards the end, the wheel travels over a speed hump, producing pronounced suspension compression with corresponding camber movement, while the unseen body mass responds with a softer, progressively damped recovery.

All movement then subsides into stillness, completing the seamless 24-second loop.

Observation

Xpresso is not a physics engine. It does not inherently understand weight, friction or inertia; it understands relationships. The challenge was therefore not to simulate every physical force, but to reproduce the behaviours the eye expects to see.

That realism comes from small decisions: steering does not change direction perfectly, suspension settles instead of simply stopping, the centre cap carries a trace of inertia, and every movement eventually returns to its resting position.

The result is a deliberately restrained study of a small piece of Rolls-Royce engineering — modelled, observed and rebuilt through motion.

Sometimes, the smallest details create the biggest statements.
